Art Practice

Partho Sengupta is a multidisciplinary artist and storyteller whose practice challenges the familiar by exploring new media and forms of creative expression. Influenced by Satyajit Ray and Bikash Bhattacharjee, his work moves between realism and surrealism, combining bold visual language with cinematic depth.

Born in Bhopal and raised across India, Partho studied at Government College of Arts & Crafts, Calcutta, before pursuing filmmaking and social communication. With over three decades in advertising, he has won numerous international and national awards, served on juries including Young Lions and Young Spikes, and advised the President of India as an art jury member at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Alongside his creative practice, he delivers masterclasses and TEDx talks, and currently serves as National Creative Head at The Times of India.

Ash Water Memories

Ash Water Memories distills a 2,700 kilometre journey along the Ganga into 15 evocative faces. Using the river itself as a medium, water, soil, ash, flotsam and flowers, each work carries its physical and emotional imprint. The artist invites the viewer to see the Ganga not as a place, but as a living, shifting energy shaped by its people.

What’s On My Plate? (2026)

This exhibition unfolds across 120 dinner plates—each carrying drawings, photographs, or small installations.

The project draws inspiration from the memoir And Then One Day by actor Naseeruddin Shah. Torn pages from the book form the base of each plate, creating a layered surface where image and memory collide.
The works collectively trace Shah’s life, films and theatre journey spanning more than fifty years. The exhibition opened at Museo Camera, where Naseer himself introduced the show and performed for the audience.

Tintin in Gurgaon (2016)

It began with an old almirah that had almost resigned itself to decay. Instead of discarding it, I treated its battered surfaces as a canvas.

Over ten days, the cupboard transformed into a tribute to Tintin—a hand-painted comic archive in acrylic. The piece eventually found its way into the Godrej Wall of Fame.

2022

During the pandemic lockdown, the world slowed down but cardboard multiplied. With scrap dealers absent from the city, piles of e-commerce boxes began to accumulate at home.

I started collecting these discarded cartons from friends and neighbours, turning them into artworks—sketches and drawings that captured fragments of life during Covid: isolation, loss, endurance and quiet hope.

The exhibition, hosted at Museo Camera, resonated deeply with audiences who had lived through the same moment in history.
